Booted from CD. Began loading and then it said:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.

Run chkdsk/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78E2524, OxC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

This is the same error message I got earlier this evening when I tried to do the repair install.

If you have access to a CD burner, do the following:

reboot and test. If still a problem, you may now be able to boot into recovery console using the cd you have. If you can, follow these steps in sequence pls:

chkdsk /r (will take a while to check the drive)
fixboot (repairs the boot sector if damaged)
fixmbr ( repairs the master boot record if damaged)

This step assumes that the CD is device "D". If not, use the proper drive letter. You can look at the mapped drives by typing "map" (without quotes) and hitting enter.

exit recovery console and reboot.

With all due respect to flubbster. fixboot, fixmbr, and the replacement of ntldr and ntdetect are steps one would take if the system wasn’t booting at all, due to a corrupt master boot record, missing boot files..etc..
Your system boots, but doesn’t talk to the hard drive properly. I think it’s more than a coincidence that your husband had the case open "cleaning" the inside of the computer. Make sure you check for loose cables before you go overwriting critical system files to fix symptoms that you don’t have.

Ther error indicated, "Replacing invalid security id with default security id", is one that is generated when windows detects file corruption and switches to automatic recovery/repair mode by attempting to do a chkdsk function. The indicated error points to some type of data/sector corruption, and not loss of communication to the drive. The "blowing out" of the pc may have indeed caused the problem, but it is likely that the problem is one of forcing microscopic particles into the drive, corrupting some data. The steps I outlined is the full sequence to attempt to repair the most common issues with a hard drive. Once you are in the Recovery Console, there is no reason not to do the full sequence of steps. After all, once you start to wash your car, you don’t stop at just the roof, you do it all. There is absolutely no harm in performing the steps, and may give a greater hint as to the cause of the ultimate problem.

I stand by my recommendation. you, of course, can do what you like.

I was working away on my computer when it suddenly blue screened. It’s maybe done that once many months ago. Upon Reboot it began running checkdisk, moving orphaned files and then it got to this line:

"Replacing Invalid Security ID with Default Security ID"

It proceeded to run this on 275k files — it took about 4 hours.

Now when I attempt to boot to windows it says ‘booting to windows’ and then dumps me to a black screen in which the mouse cursor and a black desktop are the only things available. No hotkeys respond and nothing else is visible, but you can move the mouse. Does the exact same in safe mode.

I found a QA on microsofts website where the person had the same black screen result as me that suggested resetting all the file permissions to give everyone access and then resetting the default security settings:

I ran this command I had to modify because I had icacls instead of cacls:

the command seemed to response, went to the next line, now i’m staring at it. Anybody have any other suggestions on this?
